City History and Facts
Howard County’s history dates back to Fourth of July 1851. The early settlers were planters; true pioneers who worked hard to survive. First, tobacco, then wheat, oat and rye filled the rolling hills. Livestock and fowl were plentiful. Gardens and orchards dotted the landscape. Independence and self-sufficiency were the way of life. The later development of the iron furnace, a railroad, and the industrial revolution added to the prosperity of this area. In spite of the Civil War dividing family loyalties, Howard County continued to grow and develop new cities and a model school system. These are just a few of the significant event that add to the uniqueness of Howard County and its people!
